Has your child started showing an interest in learning music? Are they still too young to start formal lessons? Whether or not your child is ready to start formal 1:1 instrumental lessons will depend on so many factors but wouldn’t it be great if there was some way to give them a musical head start?

Welcome to Kindermusik Musicians!

Kindermusik Musicians takes the innate love of music found in preschool children and builds on this to give them all the foundational skills they need before starting formal, 1:1 music lessons. Young school-aged children may not have the physical dexterity, strength or motivation to learn a musical instrument formally or know what wonderful opportunities for music making are out there so our aim is to start them off on the right path and give them a head start!

Here are 5 ways that our Kindermusik Musicians programme will give your child a musical head start:

  • Musicians helps children learn the building blocks – the language – of music. Imagine reading a book without knowing the alphabet or phonics? With the foundations of steady beat, rhythm, note reading, musical appreciation and concepts in their skill bank through our Musicians programme, young children have a head start and will pick up an instrument so much quicker. We see this even within our Musicians programme – when we give our Musicians a dulcimer (string instrument) and recorder having already learnt the basics through percussion and glockenspiel work, their progress is so much quicker. We love seeing the ‘light bulb’ moment when our students realise they can transfer the skills they have learnt to any instrument!

  • Musicians uses music to develop the whole child and provides an opportunity for children to make music with others. We seek to improve coordination and dexterity, grow social skills and confidence and so much more through music, giving every child the chance to express themselves as individuals. We fine tune key ‘soft’ skills required as a musician such as good self control to start and stop playing, attentive listening skills, the ability to practise regularly, enhanced ensemble skills and a motivation to learn – so many of these skills are vital for success at school too!

  • Musicians encourages commitment and persistence. Learning any instrument, or indeed any new skill, is not easy and requires commitment and tenacity – this is why being a musician is such a sought after skill amongst employers! The road to competency can be frustrating. It can sometimes feel long and hard work but the joy and satisfaction of acquiring a new skill or playing a piece for the first time is 100% worth it. Our Musicians programme is split into four amazing Semesters and during this time your child will gain a head start with coping with feelings of frustration but also experience the feelings of elation in a very safe, nurturing environment.

  • Musicians provides opportunities to explore the wealth of musical instruments available to learn, not just the ones us adults know of or think they should learn! It also puts music into a wider context exploring music and instruments from many genres (classical, jazz, pop, opera, ballet) and from other countries and cultures (folk music, indigenous music). Music is so much more than attending a lesson each week and we want children to appreciate a whole range of music right from the beginning of their journey.

  • Musicians provides parents with the skills to help their children on their musical journey. OK, so this one is for you, the parent, but an absolutely vital one if your child is going to succeed. Our Musicians programme is fun for all the family as we include families in activities in the sharing time part of class AND provide a toolkit of activities and advice to help you support your child at home – from reading music to exploring practise techniques, parents often find our Musicians classes give everyone a head start!

Our Musicians programme sets up children to succeed at learning a musical instrument and has been developed over nearly 50 years to provide the best head start and foundation for loving and learning music for life. Don’t just take our word for it! Here are a few testimonials from past parents:

“Kindermusik Musicians gave my son a solid grounding in musical techniques and demonstrated the joy of making music with friends. He’s now playing bassoon in county ensembles and school bands, thanks to the love of music that Sarah helped to develop” Kat, mum of two Kindermusik graduates.

“My daughter started Kindermusik aged 4 and learnt so much whilst having fun and being physically active thanks to the activities they did every week! She’s done a couple of months’ worth of piano lessons so far and is doing really well. Her teacher commented on how well she’s progressing and said Kindermusik students always pick it up much more quickly than others.” Marina.
